This is Silva, an Australian Fur Seal, at Melbourne Zoo. Silva’s keepers explained that she’d lost her partner of many years and in order to combat depression, they were trying to keep her busy by teaching her to paint.
Yep, I thought I’d misheard too but no, she has a specially designed paintbrush, some non-toxic “safe for seals and kiddies” paints and someone to hold up a canvas. Not bad for an old girl with one eye! After the painting session, the keepers gave her a check-up and Silva did everything she should – from sitting patiently on a weighing machine, to holding her mouth open for a dental inspection.
