A very pleasant 26C weather forecast for Mount Dandenong prompted a visit to William Ricketts Sanctuary for a bit of a wander. Ricketts was a Victorian sculptor and potter who spent a good part of his life living with and learning the culture and traditions from several Aboriginal communities in Central Australia.
His passion for the natural environment is carved into rocks and trees throughout the sanctuary, which was also his home. He sought to fill it with scenes of spiritual life within the forest and it’s a beautiful place for a spot of quiet reflection and contemplation. William started the sanctuary in the early 1930s and lived there, continually creating, until his death in 1993.
